Our History
Our Hamilton Chinese School was founded in 1977 by Mr. Donald Chan in the City of Hamilton. Our school started from a small number of students in St Peter & Paul School and has since grown to more than 350 students and over 20 teachers and teacher assistants.
School Management
Our Chinese School has been organized and run by parents. Volunteer parents then created the Board of Trustees and Management Team within the school organization. We are the only Chinese school in southern Ontario that does not charge tuition fee or administration charges. We rely on the donations from parents to bridge the financial short fall every year.
What We Offer
Our school is composed of three different School systems, which provide Mainland China Chinese (Simplified Chinese - Mandarin), and Cantonese Chinese education to most Chinese in the Hamilton and the outlying areas. Our school vision and mandate is to provide linguistic training and cultural exposure to all our students from JK to Grade 8 level. The schools also provide a meeting place for students and parents who are both from Chinese speaking families and non-Chinese speaking families. Our teachers have the best teaching quality in terms of academic, linguistic and traditional arts skills. We also accept Canadians into our classes if they are interested in Chinese language and culture. We provide 2.5 hours school training for our students once a week, either on Friday night or Saturday morning during two school terms. Also, we have a four-week long summer day school in the month of July throughout the city.
Policy & Activities
Our school has a policy and operation principal to guide the Board of Trustees and Management staff to ensure that the school runs in a consistent manner—like an ISO (International Standard Organization) system. Our school staff has regular meetings to look into parents suggestions and come up with improvement in our school system. Our school involve more than Chinese education. We are involved with other community events, such as participating of the planning committee for the United Way Walkathon and even organized dragon boat races during the annual Aquafest in the past. We train our students to perform the traditional Chinese Lion dance within and outside of our school system.
Our school is a cultural melting pot. It not only has been one of the wonderful cradle of teaching Chinese culture and eastern civilization, but also helps young generations combine multicultural with Canadian core value to maximum realize their future dream and reward our country Canada and our communities with their achievements. We are extremely proud that most students who have studied in our school in last 35 years have become excellent role model in our society! Our wish is to let the next generation to carry on our beautiful language and culture within the Canadian society.
